Below is the longest comment AKingsLife.com has ever received. It comes from a gentleman named Dave. So… I felt compelled to just go ahead and make it it’s own post. Get a glass of water, a snack, and maybe use the restroom before you dive into this one…

Here it goes:

Some questions that may help..What is the percentage of bicyclists vs. number of automobiles on the roads designed for automobiles only? (Yes there should be a safer designated area to ride…question is where and who funds this?)

I don’t believe that anyone wants to kill innocent bicyclist with there automobiles. (It is natural to seek blame for tragic accidents… and difficult to pinpoint the fault..) I personally have a hard time understanding why anyone would take the risk of sharing the roadway with thousands of people driving cars that are managing many distractions.(cell phones to me are the worst most common… and how many of you use these while driving…this goes for riders too.. I have seen many cyclist talking and riding) People driving swerve all the time for no apparent reason.. sometimes they just drift.. When I am driving and see cyclist.. I just take the lane furthest away.. but that is me.. and I know that not everyone can or even would do that.. And bicyclist cannot see who is coming and stand no chance for last second manuver to avoid collision..

Even if the Law was written to say that all bicyclist can use the right lane on two lane roads and moter vehicles must yield the right of way and take the left lane…. I still would not share the roadway with vehicles traveling over 30mph…too risky.. You have zero protection between your body and the mass/energy of even the smallest vehicle on the road..

Question…. what would happen to motor vehicles if they decided to line up following eachother on the shoulder of the road at 30mph under the “speed limit”.. Would this be a traffic violation and would they get pulled over? Or what if a group of Harleys did the same wearing a bunch of “hells angels jackets”? (how long would this last)

Bottom line.. It is a free country..(and everyone is free to believe what they feel is right and wrong..and argue for that) And for every argument for your cause…there are just as many for your oppositions cause… Argue all you want.. but at the end of the day.. Before you get on your bikes and share the road way with vehicles on roads built for motor vehicles (not bikes).. take a look at what you may be giving up at home.. doesn’t matter who’s fault it ends up being.. Any collision between a vehicle and a bicycle is not a positive outcome for the cyclist.. and simply not worth the risk..

If you have ever dealt with the sudden loss of a loved one to any accident…you would better understand exactly what you are risking.. a lot of people live in a “fantasy world” where they are invincible. Talk to someone who has personally lost someone to a tragic accident before you make your case….afterall death is the ultimate risk and the reason for all the concern.. “Traffic lights are designed to assist safe passage for vehicles…but if they are ignored for xyz reason(none valid) and a collision occurs death may be the result….

Last thought…. If eighteen wheelers drove at 30-40mph faster than cars (say 100-110mph) and where required to drive in the left land and automobiles in the right lane at 70mph.. how safe would you feel driving?

Even the best written Laws will not “guarantee” safety…

I wish you all the best and safety to you and your families.

Hello and greetings to all my faithful readers,

Well, those 3 or 4 faithful readers that still check in on this little dive of a blog despite my near one month absence. Things have been busy to say the least.

A little bike pedaling and a whole lot of real estate. Funny how life changes… A year ago I was in the middle of riding a 110 hour January. Now I’m looking at maybe 50 hours for the month… and a few extra pounds. Arizona racing starts in the next few weeks so I’ll have to cram in a few extra rides. Kind of like cramming for a school test.

As for the real estate life, things are going very well. My colleague Greg and I, of the Velocity Group, have been hired to sell a very unique central Phoenix project called Mezzo. Mezzo is Phoenix urban-infill at its finest. It’s made up of 10 architecturally unique urban lofts designed by highly respected architect Will Bruder and constructed by The Construction Zone. The project is ultra modern and nothing close to Phoenix’s typical cookie cutter suburbs.

Here’s a few artist renderings of the project. It’s new construction and slatted for completion in early summer.

That’s all of the update I have for now. I’m going to go and cram now… and by cram, I mean ride.

Tempe, AZ – Bicycle Radio’s “Escape The Peloton” is pleased to announce the live broadcast of their First Annual Chamois Awards highlighting the best cycling moments of 2007, on Tuesday December 18, 2007, 7:00 p.m. (MST).

The Chamois Awards will highlight Bicycle Radio’s favorite cycling moments of the year and welcome back guests from previous shows. Awards range from, “Favorite Guest of 2007,” “Top Story of 2007,” to the “Driving the SAG wagon” Award, among many others.

It was very difficult for members of “Escape the Peloton” to choose the Chamois Award for their “Favorite Guest of 2007.” Sean Mellor, host of “Escape the Peloton,” said, “Believe me; we’ve had a lot to choose from on this one. Tinker Juarez, Ned Overend, Tommy Danielson, Niki Gudex, and John Wilcockson.”

“Some of the Chamois Awards will be for pure enjoyment,” said Mellor, “like the Chamois for the comment that left us all speechless. Others, however, will exemplify what we feel our show is all about; Passion for Cycling and Passion for life. For example, you will be pleasantly surprised by our choice for the top story of 2007. And, No. It has nothing to do with doping”, added Mellor.

Larry Hendon, producer of “Escape the Peloton” offered a little bit of advice. “Bring a tissue! You will laugh and you may even shed a tear or two. Plus it’s the cold and flu season and there’s never a Kleenex around when you need one,” Hendon said.

Bicycle Radio is dedicated to bringing cycling enthusiast everywhere quality news, entertainment and conversation through broadcasts such as “Escape the Peloton” live every Tuesday at 7:00pm (MST) on BicycleRadio.com.

Hello folks,

Things are coming together nicely with my Arizona cycling based newsletter. As we speak it is at the printers. There they will give it a quick glance over, make sure it is formated properly, correct all my mistakes and fubars, and print out 1,200 copies. From there 1,000 newsletters will be mailed to Arizona cyclists and another 200 will be distributed through local bike shops.

Not too shabby.

Here are tiny pictures of the newsletter.

Well folks, to cut to the point and avoid us both a long drawn out intro… I’m putting together a newsletter for the Arizona cycling community.

I will now elaborate in a long drawn out way.

The Velocity Group Cycling News is scheduled to hit (not literally) mailboxes in early December. The print based newsletter will feature 4 full color pages that will include training tips, race results, rider interviews, photos, group ride schedules and more. The newsletter will only feature events, riders, and activities from within Arizona. If you want National news, go see CyclingNews or VeloNews. I’ll leave the big stuff to them. The Velocity Group Cycling News will also feature advertising space reserved for Arizona cyclist owned businesses. Currently Missingsaddle.com, BicycleRadio.com, Best in the West Builders, Achievers Mortgage, and CWF Financial have signed on. All are owned and operated by local cyclists.

For now the newsletter will circulate on a bi-monthly basis and reach 1,200 riders and steadily growing. If you, or anybody you know, live in Arizona and would like to receive this newsletter, leave me a comment and let me know. Please don’t forget to leave your full name and mailing address. Your comment will not appear on the site as I have to approve them before they are posted.

Oh yeah, and to clarify something… this is a printed, hard copy, tangible, hold-it-in-your-hand newsletter. Not an e-mail based newsletter. To clarify one more thing… this newsletter will feature absolutely NO real estate talk. None, nada, zero, zilch. I want people to read this as opposed to filing it in the garbage can. The newsletter is simply branded with the Velocity Group name because… well, we are the one’s sending it.

I believe that’s all. Please drop me a comment if you have any questions, comments, worries, concerns, or recommendations. I am open to any ideas as to how I can make this newsletter more informative and of more value to the local riders.

Take care.

Austin

And a final thought… The best part about the newsletter is that it will be… drum roll please… free. Free is the best price.
