Foosball tables, Disco balls and Fake geese…… that’s so hot.

August 18, 2006 1:03 pm

Bonjour mon ami,

I’ve been away at the office for a few days now……but now I’m back.

Allow me to explain.

First off, if you didn’t get the opporunity to travel this past weekend via airplane……….consider yourself lucky. I flew out of Atlanta early Thursday morning about the time word was getting out about the terrorist plans getting busted up in London. I have never seen a line as long as the one I saw Thursday morning at Atlanta’s South Terminal. Fortunately, it was Marc’s problem to deal with because I was flying out of the less visited North Terminal. While checking in my bags the lady told me I wasn’t allowed to carry toothpaste, shampoo and other liquids on the plane. To lighten up the situation I decided to make a joke about not needing shampoo due to the on going daily disapearance of my hair. She didn’t laugh and I decided it would then be a good time to stop making jokes in the airport. While the security line at the South Terminal was still plenty long, it was nothing compared to Marc’s hour long wait. Needless to say he missed his flight……….and then they lost his bag……….and then he crashed hard in Friday nights crit………..and then, as of Monday evening, they still haven’t found his bag. Merde!

Ok, back to the travel…..so luckily Evan, Pete and I somehow cut in line and only had to wait for about 30 minutes. The huge bummer of this was that due to the country’s newfound heightened security, the inevitbale bare foot metal detector tippy toe dance would have to take place. Of all the days to wear flip flops…….and that floor…….so, so filthy.

After boarding the flight I was incredibly lucky to have not a single delay or lost piece of baggage. Hot diggity damn! The team and I were heading to Montreal for La Classique Louis Garneau. It was the 58th edition of this 250k race from Montreal to Quebec City. It was a really cool race and an important one for us due to Garneau being one of our bigger sponsors.

As for me……I stepped up to the plate, calmly took a sip of water and then lobbed a long bomb……the big momma hootchie Hail Mary herself. What a marvelous thought……..”90k down……..160k to go……….2:20 gap……..just me, Mr. Cross Wind, and some short and stubby guy unable to provide adequate draft”. The short stubby guy and I were part of an original group of 4. Quickly, the other two began to tire and sit on so I split off and brought the short and stubby guy with me. He and I would then swap off for the next bazzillion or so kilometers (it sure felt like a bazzillion, maybe even two bazzillion?). With about 40k to go, he and I were finally caught by a fast moving peloton as the road began to go up and down. I nearly went right through the bunch like you-know-what through a goose……it didn’t feel too good but my job for the day was done. I did however get a bit of reward by taking out the half-way through sprint prize of $500.

What goes through your head while out front nursing a couple minute gap?

Well, besides the obvious thought of winning, I had Bob Seger’s “Against the Wind” on repeat in my head.

Bob Seger.jpg

Don’t know the song? Shame on you. Turn your computer off right this minute and run out and buy it. You’ll thank me later. It’s a classic……like candy for your ears. Particularly the part at the end where he repeats, “Let the cowboy’s ride, against the wind”. I also had an odd phrase pop into my head…….I have no idea where it came from so don’t hold it against me…….ok ready?…….. “Drivin’ it like Al Cowlings”.

Al Cowlings.jpg

Yeah, I know, pretty retarded, but like I said….no clue where the hell that one came from. You may (or may not) remember Al Cowlings as the man who drove OJ Simpson around in that now famous slow-speed white bronco police chase.

I would also like to extend a huge thanks to Louis Garneau USA for taking such good care of the team while up in the great white north. They went way out of their way to accomodate the team in a very gracious manner. The team’s very fortunate to have not only such a good sponsor but also a very fun and kind group of friends as well. Also, a huge thanks to big Louis himself for putting the team up at his sweet “Clubhouse” Sunday night after La Classique. Merci beaucoup! There was a foosball table, and a disco ball and fake geese on the ceiling…….that’s so hot.

We’ll talk again soon.

Downers Grove Poll

August 16, 2006 5:33 am

Well I just set up a new Downers Grove Poll. It’s located on the left sidebar of the home page if you scroll down a bit.

The question is:

Next Sunday in Downers Grove, who will claim the National Championship as the first American across the line?

Scroll down, make a click, and throw your 2 cents in.

As of right now, Alex Cadelario is winning but Shawn Milne, Tony Cruz and Rashaan Bahati are right behind him. Better hurry up and vote.

Cheers.

Are you bored right now?

If you’re looking to kill some time, why not have Samuel L. Jackson make a personal phone call to somebody you know?

Have him call your mom, dad, wife, friend, etc……It’s great fun.

Hi Austin,

Well, the races are over, and I did not meet my one goal of coming home with four gold medals….. It happened in the 40k race. It started out fine, there were three of us drafting a new gal who didn’t know what was happening. I actually felt sorry for her, we were using her. She really wasn’t going very fast, but no one wanted to jump ahead. We had picked up a couple men who had started a minute before us, and latched themselves on to our pace line. Yvonne was one gal I was determined to beat in all races, she was right on my wheel in both races. We got to 500 meters and I took off, leaving the line behind, I felt elated…I was leaving Yvonne way behind– but I didn’t know my one competitor was also in the line and came up when I took off. She came up on my left side and just before the line I saw her wheel, she beat me by 4 tenths of a sec. The worst part was, I was
so sure I was ahead that I had let up before the finish line just enough to let Bobbi get me. Man, did I ever feel awful…such a disappointment. I know I could have beat her if I had just kept my legs going past the finish line. That was Wednesday. I felt better Thursday morning and went all out on the 10k tt. I beat Yvonne by over two minutes and was the second fastest gal of all ages. I also had beat Yvonne in the 5K TT on Wednesday morning by two and a half minutes, again the second fastest. Thursday afternoon was the 20K race. I was rather tired by this time and wasn’t sure how I would do (once I got going I was fine). I didn’t want Yvonne to get on my wheel again as I knew she wouldn’t take turns pulling. And that is just what happened, on my wheel again, but there was another gal that we latched on to. Two others took off ahead of us, one we never did see again. But the yellow jersey gal was a little too far ahead, I was afraid to use that much energy to go around and try to catch her, I knew Yvonne would be on my wheel the whole way. So I waited. Finally the gal who had been pulling all this time asked if I would lead, of course I said ok (this was the time). I laid it on a little faster than we had been going and slowly was catching up to the yellow jersey. When almost there I looked back and Yvonne and the other gal weren’t there! They had dropped way behind…. That made my day. I followed Yellow Jersey’s wheel from then on, up to the 500m mark, which was slightly up hill. I then took off around her and left her in the dust. Again I came in the second fastest of all age groups. Only a 57 year old beat me in the three races (40k exception, two beat me, one was my age) All in all I had a good two days. I learned a valuable lesson this week, and it won’t ever happen again. I will never stop peddling until I am well past the finish line……

My heart rate got up to 172 in the 10K TT this morning and 170 in the 5K TT. 165 in the 40K race and 170 in the 20K race. For the first time we had chips on our ankles to record the time. It really worked well and so much easier than trying to see numbers and calling them out. Especially the men who had bunch finishes. I have the times and ages of all the riders. If you are interested I can send them to you. It’s just us old folks, but we have a great time and make many lasting friendships. I will be going to the Nationals in Louisville, KY next June 22-July 3.

I have no formal training in mountain lion wrestling……

August 1, 2006 2:00 pm

Yes, I’ve been slacking lately with the website posts…………….

I’ve been busy.

No seriously, I have been. Stop laughing, that’s rude. Seriously, I have been. No, not on E-Bay.

Ok fine then, I’ll explain.

This past weekend, Suzanne and I went to San Diego for her birthday. Her old college roomates live there now, so we went to visit and get caught up. On Saturday, I drove out to Chula Vista for a nice training ride in the mountians. I’ve spent some time at the Olympic Training Center there so I know the roads a bit. As I got back in the mountains, I turned around prematurely due to a sign on the side of the road about 4 mountain lions being spotted a few miles ahead……..Hm? Something tells me the mountain lions would have won had we crossed paths.

I have no formal training in mountain lion wrestling. None at all.

But something tells me this guy does. Or perhaps the mountain lion is just choking and he’s lending a helping hand? I dunno.

All in all it was a great weekend. Also, I’ve recently enrolled in school full time for the fall semester. I figured it was time to exercise my brain and prevent it from fully turning to mush. Partial mush is ok though. I was a bit uncomfortable heading in there to talk to an advisor for the first time in years. I can comfortably navigate any airport in the world but a community college advisement center scares the dickens out of me. Hm, weird. I haven’t been in school since 2000. 6 full years…..What the hell was I thinking? Seriously. Kids, if you’re still reading this, stay in school. I know, I know, I’m sounding like your parents. But, from one soon to be 26 year old sophomore to hopefully not another, stay in school. I promise to stop, but whatever you decide to do, just keep your foot in the door. Ok, I’m done now. So I opted to pass over COM100 and take COM110 in an attempt to not be “that guy”. I already have a receeding hairline and that happens to be on of the pre-requisites for being “that guy”, so I feel I made the right decision. Although, it’s not like COM110 is much better. Eureka. Hopefully, it will just help to lessen the sting a bit. But who knows, maybe I can tell my classmates what the 80’s were like and they can tell me what Hillary Duff is up to? Or how to tell which Olsen twin in Mary-Kate and which one is Ashley Olsen? Give you a dollar if you can tell. Beats me……..

Olsen twins.jpg

I’ve got my racing schedule for the rest of the year. I’m heading out bright and early Thursday morning to put some time in at the office. Here’s my schedule:

Aug. 5th- Bank of America Crit
Aug. 12th- La Classique Louis Garneau Montreal-Quebec
Aug. 19-20th- USPRO Crit
Sep. 1-3rd- USPRO Road and TT Champs
Sep. 4th- US10K Classic
Sep. 7-10th- Bermuda GP

After that, she’s all done for the winter.

Where did the season go? Seriously. I still remember the California NRC March swing like it was yesterday…….weird.

Alright, talk to you later.
