Rockin’ Down the Highway….

June 29, 2006 11:27 am

Well, I’m heading on down to Tucson in a few hours to do a little riding.

In the words of the great Dobbie Brothers song, “Rockin’ Down The Highway”……

“Got those highway blues, cant you hear my motor runnin
Flyin down the road with my foot on the floor
All the way in town they can hear me comin
Fords about to drop, she wont do no more”

Toulouse Street……that album is the Doobies at their best. Write that down.

Check out the “Thought From Janet” page. I updated it today. In her latest e-mail, Janet talks training, her 48th Wedding Anniversary and that hard to push hand clutch of the John Deere 80…….. It’s good reading.

Cheers.

The block is hot……. no really, it’s friggin hot here!

I’m taking a homework break right now………….

Yes, a homework break. I just started another online business class. You see, some guys went straight from high school to college. Some guys didn’t. I’m kind of part of both groups but probably more the second one as I stomp around with my precious 25 credits. But, in an attempt to chip away at a coveted degree and to not allow my brain to go to mush (anymore than it already has), I’ve enrolled back in college to slowly chip away at things.

School’s actually a nice thing to be doing right now. Like I mentioned in the title……it’s friggin hot here! Like Africa hot. I’ve been leaving to train somewhere between o’dark thirty and 6:00 am and by 9:30-ish, I’ve got to be home or I start to roast like a chicken on a rotisserie. No bueno……..but, muy bueno for the ol’ tan lines. Viva la chin strap tan line!!!! So hot right now, so hot.

Yeah, the brains totally mush right now. Is it the lack of homework over the years or the 6 or so hours I’ve been working on “developing my professional skills and standards”? I got a good guess…..

Oh yes, about the bike………trainings been going well. The heat really doesn’t bother me so much. I mean, it’s physically limiting, but the early mornings and multiple water bottle rides don’t bother me too much. I’ve been riding in Phoenix for almost 13 years now. If it really bothered me, I’d leave. I took some time off after Beauce and have begun training again this week. Rest = Good. This weekend I’m heading down to Tucson to put in a few long days in the saddle. After that, I’ll be back in Phoenix for some specific interval work and then I’m off to the Cascade Cycling Classic in July. Follow that up with the Tour de Toona and that puts me in August already. Wow, where did the season go? I’ll be doing base miles in no time.

Alright, play time is over. The books are calling my name. Damn dirty books……..

Bye.

Austin.

Zonder Fiets, and an interview with The Wonger.

June 23, 2006 2:20 pm

I’m heading out of town this afternoon sans velo, zonder fiets, sin bicicleta, without the bike. I’m kind of excited. I’m looking to get a little rest and enjoy some time with Suzanne and my family.

If you’re bored, check out the latest edition of Outside magazine. My dad has an article in their called “Can You Handle The Truth”. It’s about time trialing and is a very nice article. Turn to page 53 and read till your little hearts content…….

And finally, to leave you with some more video interviewing pleasure. I introduce to you: Jittery Joe’s Phil Wong.

And you thought Neil’s middle name was rough…….

Newark, Those crazy Laurent’s, and a delightful Vegetable Casseroule.

June 20, 2006 7:58 am

I’m finally home now. I did end up sitting on the runway in Newark for an hour yesteray evening. Nobody got smashed though. I do however think Newark is the Earth’s ass. Along with Gila Bend, Arizona.

I was getting caught up on the old cyclingnews.com this morning and was reading about the latest drug trial in the cycling world. Called the “Cahors Affair”, this one circulates around the use of the infamous Pot Belge, a mixture of cocaine, caffeine, pain killers and sometimes amphetamine and heroine. Something I don’t think even Dave Chappelles’s Tyrone Biggums would dare touch.

Here’s what cyclingnews had to say:

During the first day of hearings in the “Cahors” trial, Laurent Roux’s younger brother Fabien testified that it was former professional and current French TV consultant Laurent Jalabert who first introduced him to “pot belge”. “I was initiated to using pot belge during a party with Laurent Jalabert in 2001,” the 24 year-old said. “Together with other professionals, I’ve seen him injecting himself in the garage of his house that evening. It was a party organised by his fan club. It’s frequent in the cycling world. These parties take place during the off-season. I came with my brother, who was a professional. The whole team of the cyclist who was hosting participated in these parties - from mechanic to soigneur.”

What the hell kind of party is this? Is there glow sticks, platform shoes, pacifiers and techno music too? Rave it up, eh boys? Man, the parties I get invited too usually involve a 6 pack of Negra Modelo, hamburger patties and some sort of delicious vegetable casseroule.

Note to self………………don’t go to a Laurent Roux party…….or a Laurent Jalabert party…….or any party with French guys present for that fact……..

I think I’ll just stick to my kind of parties for now. In fact, since I don’t need to ride today and in honor of the fact that it’s 7000 degrees outside, I’m going to have a Pool Party. Please call me for directions to my pool (unless your name is Laurent) and for what kind of pot luck dish to bring. There will be no lifeguard on duty, so please leave the kiddies at home. Trunks are mandatory, bring your own raft, and the Pot Belge is strickly forbidden………I’ll smash ya.

Oh, and could somebody please bring some sort of delightful vegetable casseroule or pasta salad? That would be great.

Just come around the gate, I’ll already be in the pool.

Cheers.

A Smashing Good Time!!

My CSC Invitational crash video has almost 800 views……….sweet. I’m aiming for 1,000.

Haven’t seen it yet? Like to see it again? Scroll down a bit to “CSC Invitational Crash Video”, hit play and marvel at the spectacle caught on film.

I’ve hit hour 3 of a 4 hour lay over and I think I’m cracking……..No amount of candy will save me now. Well, maybe candy, a McDonalds milk shake and the new People’s magazine with pictures of Brangelina’s new baby Shiloh. Who names a kid Shiloh anyways? It looks to much like “Silo”…….and that’s way too farm-ish for the modern Beverly Hills Family. I think I’m going to name my kid Trough or Pigglet. Maybe even Tractor? Tractor King. I kind of like it.

Well, I’ve exhausted all my available airport resources and now I’m just coasting in on fumes. You can only go up and down the moving walkway’s so many times before it loses it’s luster. My flight just got delayed another 30 minutes which is beyond fantastic. Currently I’m watching a possibly drunken, little Asian woman argue with the lady at the Continental check-in desk. It’s pretty amusing. I think the Continental ladies gonna smash her if she keeps it up. That’s what I’m hoping for……. I’ll try and get it on video…….Neil just called me, he’s been sitting out on the runway for an hour and a half now. Talk about wanting to smash someone! They’re saying there’s weather problems. Looks fine to me as I gaze out the window. Hopefully I don’t sit out there for an hour and a half too. I might just have to smash someone as well. If I do, I’ll make sure to get it on video. At least it’ll get me some page views.

Page views are so hot right now.

Cheers.

Happy Father’s Day Paps!!!!!!

June 18, 2006 5:09 pm

Happy Father’s Day Paps!!

Well Beauce is officially done. Thank you Jesus…..

The whole Philly on Sunday-Tour de Beauce on Tuesday thing got a bit tough in the end. I ended up finishing Beauce in 23rd place even after doing a fair amount of work for Willo. He finished up 13th. The team had a handful of top 10’s and Pete made a podium appearance in stage 5. All in all I’m pleased with my form and with how things finished up for me. When I get back to Phoenix it’s time for a little mid-season break of 5 days. I’m pretty cooked right now and not too interested in pedaling for awhile. I think I’m going to enjoy my time sans bike.

I’m going to try and write a bit more about the Tour de Beauce when I get home and situated. It’s an incredibly tough stage race. I think it was one of the hardest stage races I’ve ever done. None of the days are easy and there’s no sitting in and getting sucked along in the bunch. It’s all up and down with crap pavement and a bit of wind. It made for 6 pretty tough days.

I fly out tomorrow and by the evening I’ll be back in Phoenix’s lovely 110 degree heat………I start an online college course tomorrow as well. After 5 years of allowing the space between my ears to go to mush, I’ve started back in school, slowly chipping away at that elusive degree……I’ll keep you posted.

Finally, I’ll leave you with an akingslife.com exclusive interview with Jittery Joe’s Neil Shirley…..Enjoy.
