Snakes and Seger’s Night Moves…….
May 20, 2006 11:49 amI’m not exactly sure where you’re from but I’m from Phoenix and it’s getting a bit hot out right now…..
I’ve been leaving pretty early in the morning to get my rides in. If I’m going long, I leave by 5:30am. If I’m going a bit shorter, I leave by 7:00am. By about 11:00am it’s pretty toasty outside.
In the desert, we have snakes. Since it’s warming back up, all the snakes are coming back out of hibernation to look around and do snake things. Like slither around and eat rodents. They also like to cross the roads, which in some cases proves fatal for them………tear.
But it can also scare the hell out of me…….Allow me to explain….You see, I’ll be riding along minding my business and listening intently as Mr. Ipod has Bob Seger tell me stories of women and what they’re all about. Then out of nowhere, in the corner of my eye, I see a large rattlesnake on the ground about an arms length off of my right shoe. Eureka! It’s good for a few more heart beats a minute.
Thursday I was doing a long ride to Payson and I was trying to stay as far right as possible to give the traffic some space. My shoes were almost hitting the bushes on the side of the road when I heard the sound of a rattlesnake rattling it’s tail. Eureka again! Rattlesnakes “rattle” their tails when they’re coiled up which happens to also be the only time they can strike.
I’m going to try and do my best to not get bit by a snake this summer……
Cheers.
Austin.

Thank goodness we don’t have snakes…… I just have to contend with roosters that are protecting there harem. One attacted me on Tues. And we don’t have the heat–I have to wait until 10am at least to ride if I don’t want to freeze. It was 45 this morning, and frost predicted for tonight. Janet
Attacked by a rooster eh? No roosters here in AZ……. I did however see a gila monster crossing the street today. First time I’ve ever seen that.
